Sr. High Sunday School Class

We learned some interesting and important facts about Palm Sunday.

The Jewish people showed their love for Jesus by sacrificing palm branches to make a royal path for Jesus as He rode into Jerusalem.  The people thought Jesus came to free them from Roman rule and set Himself up as their earthly king.

The palm branch was to the Jews what the stars and stripes is to us.  It was the emblem on their coins.

Palm trees were important to the economy of the Jews.  In addition to wood, the palm tree provided dates for food and palm oil.  The branches were used for material to make baskets, mats used for beds, and even “thread”.

Even more important was the fact of lamb selection day.  This was the day the families selected their best lamb for their Passover sacrifice.  They would take this lamb into their home and love it as a family member.  Then that lamb was taken to the temple to be sacrificed.

Jesus was God’s selection on “lamb selection” day.  He would be the Lamb selected to die once and for all for the whole world.  There was no more need to offer animals in our behalf.

Answers to April

Quiz of the Month

1.       Who was Keturah?

Answer: After Sarah, Abraham’s wife died, Abraham married Keturah.  Abraham and Keturah had six sons who are named in Genesis 25:1.

2.     It had never rained before the Flood.  How could life – both plant and animal as well as human – be sustained without the benefit of rainfall?

Answer: See Genesis 2:4 - 6

3.     Who was Israel’s first king?

Answer: Saul

4.     Jesus’ mother had inherited Adam’s sinful blood.  Jesus did not inherit Adam’s sinful blood.  How could this be accomplished seeing that Jesus was Mary’s son?

Answer: The baby’s blood supply comes from the father – not the mother.  God was Jesus’ Father, therefore Jesus’ blood was pure and sinless.  Mother’s blood does not mingle with baby’s blood.  Nutrients pass through the walls of the mother’s blood vessels to the baby’s blood vessels, but her blood does not.  This information helps us to understand how Jesus could be born with sinless blood in His body.

The DVD Fearfully and Wonderfully Made explains in greater detail this marvelous miracle.

May Questions

1.       Who was Hannah?

2.     Noah’s grandfather’s name was mentioned in the Bible.  What was his name?

Tested By Fire

by Merrill and Virginia Womack

This book portrays the ultimate courage in crisis, and faith in God.

Merrill Womack was a much in demand concert singer.  An airplane accident badly burned his body and totally destroyed his face.  Look at the photo of his charred face and marvel that God had spared his eyesight and his vocal chords.  The doctor did reconstruct his eyelids, his mouth, his hands, etc.

After 14 years of agony and over 50 surgeries, Merrill was again singing, playing piano, and speaking to large audiences.

God tested this family by fire, and out of the suffering He made something beautiful in their lives.

Celebrating the Wonder of Motherhood

by Bobbi McCaughey

Bobbi McCaughey is a mother of 8.  When Mikayla was three years old, her mommy gave birth to 7 – yes SEVEN -  new baby siblings.

Bobbi relates some very amusing happenings as well as very difficult ones.  Going to a neighbor’s basement with 8 small children while the tornadoes passed by was most discomforting.

One of the amusing stories is about two volunteer helpers who did not know each other before that time.  As they got acquainted, one inquired of the other, “How many little ones do you have?”  The answer was, “I’m not even married, so I don’t have any kids.”  3 year old Mikayla looked around the room and asked her, “Do you want some?”

The Young at Heart group attended the Choose Life Spring fundraiser at the Crystal ballroom on April 21.  We enjoyed good fellowship, a delicious dinner, and wonderful music by the Tradesmen (even some do wop).  We are looking forward to our third annual picnic at Sue & Carl Myers camp sometime in June.

On the table side by side;

A Holy Bible and the TV Guide,

One is well worn but cherished with pride,

(Not the Bible, but the TV Guide).

One is used daily to help folks decide,

No! It isn’t the Bible; it’s the TV Guide.

As pages are turned, what shall they see?

Oh, what does it matter, turn on the TV.

So they open the book in which they confide

(No, not the Bible, it’s the TV Guide).

The Word of God is seldom read,

Maybe a verse ere they fall into bed.

Exhausted and sleepy and tired as can be,

Not from reading the Bible, but watching TV.

So, then back to the table, side by side,

Is the Holy Bible and the TV Guide.

No time for prayer, no time for the Word;

The plan for salvation is seldom heard.

Forgiveness of sin so full and free

Is found in the Bible, not on TV!!
